Barcelona hosts the EPIC kickoff meeting: innovation and networking for sustainable packaging

On February 11-12, the kick-off meeting of the EPIC project took place in Barcelona, Spain. EPIC is funded by the European Union’s Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) program. This meeting marked the official launch of an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the packaging sector through innovation and sustainability.

Under the coordination of Nanoprogress (Czech Republic), the meeting brought together all project partners to present planned activities and discuss the next steps.

EPIC focuses on key areas of packaging, such as pharmaceutical and biomedical, cosmetics, and food sectors. The main objective is to enhance the innovation ecosystems in less developed regions by creating opportunities for collaboration, networking, and technological support to accelerate the transition toward sustainable packaging solutions.

The first day of the event was dedicated to the presentation of all work packages, providing a detailed overview of the project’s activities and specific objectives. European Commission officials also introduced the I3 program, highlighting key administrative and financial provisions to ensure effective resource management and tangible impact on the territory.

On the second day, participants had the opportunity to visit Barcelona’s DFactory, a cutting-edge center dedicated to promoting Industry 4.0. This facility hosts some of the leading companies in 3D printing, robotics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The visit allowed partners to explore the latest technological innovations and identify potential synergies with the EPIC project, laying the groundwork for future collaborations.

EPIC is not just a research project but a strategic initiative to rethink the future of packaging, combining sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. Collaboration among experts, businesses, and institutions is essential to tackling the industry’s challenges and developing cutting-edge solutions with a concrete market impact.
